Royal Commission into violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability
The Disability Royal Commission (DRC) was established in April 2019 in response to community concern about widespread reports of violence against, neglect, abuse and exploitation of people with disability.
This review recognises people with a disability are equal citizens and have the right to the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights fundamental freedoms, including respect for their inherent and individual independence. Also, that people with a disability have the same right as other members of society to live and participate in safe environments free from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.
ALRM has been contracted to support the Royal Commission, specifically by providing legal advice and information to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a disability. This advice is also available to their carers, families, supporters and advocates.
This Royal Commission will use the information gathered to;
• Preventing violence and better protecting people with a disability from experiencing violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation
• Developing best practice in reporting, investigating and responding to violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation
• Promoting a more inclusive society that supports people with a disability to be independent and live free from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation
