Aboriginal Field Services
Our Field Officers ensure that Aboriginal people who are arrested are properly advised of their rights at the time of the arrest. They are usually the first point of contact with ALRM’s Criminal Section who are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Support is provided via telephone, or in more serious or complex matters, an appointment will be made to meet a lawyer.
Anyone from an Aboriginal background who has been charged with committing an offence by the Police has the right to request a phone call to ALRM before any interview is conducted.
Our Field Officers will help an Aboriginal person to:
- understand the criminal justice system process and provide advice about his or her rights
- take instructions/details for his or her lawyer who will represent him or her in Court
- record information regarding the charges and follow up with any questions
- increase Police’s awareness about how they should deal with an Aboriginal person
